Position Overview

The Critical Care Medicine Department in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Program Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

The role includes responsibility for the day to day leadership and management of processes related to implementation and organization of a large research team which includes longitudinal cohort, implementation science and other health services research studies. In addition, the Research Program Manager will develop processes and protocols related to implementation of the best practices in critically ill patients through work with the Principal Investigators.

The work is complex and involves a high level of concentration, resourcefulness and creativity. The work requires an ability to work independently and to deadlines.  

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Program Management
    • Responsible for coordinating the activities of interdisciplinary team and researcher collaborators
    • Coordination of both short term and long term research projects, including the creation and implementation of the detailed project plan, project briefs, reports, and dissemination of research outcomes
    • Participates in the research program strategy with delegation of tasks to the respective team members as necessary
    • Development, implementation, and continuous improvement of program policies, procedures, and processes with respect to all studies and initiatives
    • Manages resources (human, financial, and infrastructure) to ensure research projects will meet objectives and targets
  • Project Administrative Support
    • Obtain necessary ethical and safety approvals to ensure success of the research program, including the submission of research protocols for ethics approval
    • Support applications for local, provincial and national research funding to support operation of the clinical laboratories
    • Manage and oversee both the purchases and the expenses of the laboratory, including monitoring budgets, accounts, and providing financial reports as necessary
    • Interact with other academic and healthcare (e.g. Alberta Health Services) entities, including other individual researchers & their teams, academic departments and administrative departments (such as HR and accounting)
    • Assist in writing research proposals for further development of clinical research in the Department of Critical Care Medicine
    • Develop study recruitment protocols and procedures for the Principal Investigators final review and approval
    • Conduct literature searches of online bibliographic databases
    • Undertake systematic literature reviews and prepare a written synthesis of findings
    • Collaboratively write grants and funding proposals to secure research funding from external granting agencies
    • Review and revise policies and procedures, as required, to ensure that the research goals are met for both the relevant studies
    • Will contribute to the knowledge mobilization activities of the research team
    • Will interact with other studies and institutions as a liaison for the active studies and initiatives
  • Management
    • Responsible for all hiring, performance reviews and management of immediate research team members
    • Act as a coach & mentor in training and development of junior team members (including summer students, graduate students, research assistants, and research associates)
    • Will have full managerial discretion over direct reports (research assistants and support staff), up to and including performance management, discipline, and termination in consultation with individual Principal Investigators

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters or PhD in a health-related field preferred
  • 3-5 years relevant experience in research or research operations in a supervisory or project management capacity
  • Strong skills in critical thinking, innovation, problem solving, communication and management of interpersonal relationships is required
  • Able to convey information to a variety of audiences, including patients, families, clinicians, researchers, and policy makers, often at the same time
  • Experience in writing successful funding applications is strongly recommended
  • Skill and experience in preparing manuscripts for publication
  • Knowledge of electronic bibliographic databases
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team and on a multi-national level is required
  • Ability to compile, draft and maintain correspondence, spreadsheets, reports, and presentations
  • Skill in preparing, analyzing, and monitoring budgets
  • Demonstrated success in developing, implementing, coordinating and managing health research projects with multiple partners and disciplines
  • Experience in collecting, verifying, interpreting and reporting on data including a strong ability to objectively review data and identify potential issues and trends
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to facilitate journal articles, presentations, and relating the importance of cohort research and data governance to other disciplines
  • A strong commitment to research excellence
  • Experience managing research staff, demonstrated leadership skills and excellent problem solving skills with a drive for results
  • Proven organizational skills with an ability to set priorities and complete multiple tasks within specified timelines in order to meet deadlines
  • Experience with managing budgets, including providing detailed financial reports to the Principal investigators and granting agencies
  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of multi-disciplinary teams and be able to communicate and cooperate with team members, other disciplines and management
  • Ability to successfully manage an intensive workload which fluctuates under deadlines
  • Demonstrated judgment and attention to detail to ensure reported outcomes of the research are reliable, accurate and robust
  • Demonstrated professionalism, tact and maturity in handling highly sensitive and confidential information ethically and with discretion
