Position Overview

The Department of Paediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant, PICU Research Program. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

The PICU Research Program consists of a growing group of clinical researchers who perform various research projects related to the care of critically ill children. The PICU research assistant will provide support to members of this research program.

Position is located at the Alberta Children's Hospital and will also work closely with graduate students. 

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Coordinate PICU Research Program

  • Attend all PICU Research Committee meetings
  • Develop agenda for Research Committee meetings
  • Take & distribute minutes for Research Committee meetings
  • Liaise with PICU physicians about research operational issues
  • Liaise with Department Research Advisor on research operational issues

Assist PICU physicians with the conduct of research

  • Assist in completion of REB applications
  • Assist in reporting to REB
  • Assist in completion of AHS Research Agreements (Data Collection and Transfer agreements) with AHS research advisors
  • Coordinate ratification of inter-institutional agreements with University
  • Assist in completion of grant applications, including editing sections of documents as appropriate, including editing of budgets, obtaining relevant approvals and signatures etc
  • Coordinate financial transactions including payments of invoices, submission of expenses, completion of financial reports as required
  • Coordinate University HR transactions

Perform data collection, cleaning and analysis for PICU physicians

  • Assist research nurses in completion of Case Report Forms for clinical studies (de-identified data only)
  • Assist PICU physicians with data collection for other studies where research nurse not involved
  • Enter data into databases as appropriate
  • Clean-up data in databases
  • Perform simple data analysis from databases as appropriate
  • Prepare reports for physicians from data analysis
  • Assist physicians in editing abstracts, manuscripts and presentations from research activities

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree required. Masters degree preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Previous research experience in a medical/clinical area preferred
  • Advanced skills in statistical software programs
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Internet skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability for professional report writing
  • Knowledge of research ethics and regulations for granting agencies
  • Ability to problem solve in complex situations
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Knowledge of the University of Calgary processes and procedures is desirable
