Nurse Clinician, Department of Medicine, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Nurse Clinician.  This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Nurse Clinician reports to the leads of the Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) Clinic and will be adept in working in a multidisciplinary environment comprised of Cardiologists, Endocrinologists, medical trainees, and research personnel.

The main objective of the Nurse Clinician is to facilitate establishment followed by efficient and effective flow of the Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) Clinic. The FH Clinic aims to identify, characterize, and treat individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia in order to prevent adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

The position will initially be part-time (working approximately 15 hours a month) with eventual progression to full-time daytime clinic hours. The position requires phlebotomy, thus the Nurse Clinician may be exposed to biologically hazardous material including bloodborne pathogens and viruses. An understanding of biosafety and bloodborne pathogens is required.

This is a recurring part-time position.  Recurring part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule. 

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Triage referrals to the FH clinic
  • Schedule patients, clinical staff and clinic space
  • Prepare, organize and complete clinic charts for each patient
  • Perform the initial clinic assessment including vitals, review of medications and medical history, and completion of FH screening questionnaire
  • Ensure proper collection, processing and shipment of specimens
  • Counsel patients about the diagnosis, implications, and treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia Assist in policies and procedures to obtain pharmaceuticals
  • Communicate with external facilities, including other hospitals, labs and pharmacies, to obtain relevant patient history and data under the HIA process
  • Understand and adhere to confidentiality of all personal information, as per privacy codes
  • Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, and with the campus community
  • Receive and maintain training in the area of nursing care
  • Involved in day-to-day interaction with other staff, monitoring, planning, and organizing own activities and that of patients in the clinic
  • Assist with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services
  • Budget involvement including developing reports, tracking expenses, and reconciliation of accounts
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing
  • Current CARNA registration an asset
  • Specialized certifications, Good Clinical Practice Certification, BCLS-HCP
  • Knowledge and understanding in cardiac sciences an asset
  • Previous experience working with clients with cardiac and vascular diseases an asset
  • WHMIS
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Previous knowledge/experience in clinical cardiovascular/endocrine research is an asset
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments, including possible overseas training
