Position Overview

The McCaig Institute for Bone & Joint Health in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Manager, MoJo Operations. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

This position is accountable and reports to the Scientific Director.  

The Centre for Mobility and Joint Health (MoJo) is a clinical research facility within the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health in the Cumming School of Medicine. This state-of-the-art facility will better connect patients, physicians, and researchers from across the province, helping to generate evidence to inform policy, practice, and treatment for Albertans. The facility brings together state-of-the-art technologies including biomarker and motion analysis as well as advanced medical imaging equipment, making the McCaig Institute one of the leading bone and joint research institutes in the world. The facility includes dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray, EOS, ultrasound and high-resolution CT.

The successful incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the successful operations of the facility including ensuring effective operating procedures, quality management, maintaining accreditations/certifications (UCalgary and CPSA), managing ethics applications and providing annual reports to granting agencies and other stakeholders. They will also support strategic growth of the facility and help to facilitate increased utilization, encouraging the development of research projects from groups across the Cumming School of Medicine and University of Calgary.  Judgement and discretionary decision making which impacts programs, services, finances and/or department operations applicable to the Cumming School of Medicine and University of Calgary are required attributes.

Early morning and evening hours may be occasionally required to attend critical meetings or to meet deadlines.  

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Operational Management

  • Formulate, develop and manage policies and procedures for the facility including SOPs and workflows
  • Take responsibility for the successful completion of projects from conception through to the submission of all contract deliverables and project closure
  • Oversee and lead study intake
  • Responsible for obtaining/maintaining CPSA accreditation
  • Develop, implement and maintain quality control procedures
  • Complete CFI and other regular business reporting
  • Monitor and control the schedule, quality and risk of projects undertaken by research team
  • Performs detailed management of the design, documentation and implementation of complex research projects
  • Liaise and manage relationships with academic and industry partners, develop collaborative research protocols that meet academic, industry and funding requirements
  • Facilitates research and innovation activities to align with the strategic plan

Technical

  • Understands the principles of equipment in the centre and able to interact professionally with vendors.
  • Optimizes efficient schedules of equipment usage and staff support for efficient operations.
  • Coordinates maintenance and upkeep of all imaging equipment, and directly communicates with vendors to ensure proper maintenance schedules are maintained.
  • Oversees computing infrastructure and manages technical support.
  • Understands and may develop medical image processing techniques, and supports staff and trainees in proper application.

Communication & Relationships

  • Ensuring key internal and external stakeholders are informed (UofC, AHS, UofA, provincial and federal government, governing bodies, industry and external collaborators)
  • Promote collaboration and knowledge translation with internal and external members at every opportunity
  • Facilitates team and client meetings effectively
  • Keeps research team well informed of changes within the organization and general corporate news
  • Effectively communicates relevant project information to superiors
  • Delivers engaging, informative, well-organized presentations
  • Resolves and/or escalates issues in a timely fashion
  • Understands how to communicate difficult/sensitive information tactfully

Financial Administration

  • Responsible for the establishment of the facility’s annual operational and financial goals and objectives
  • Establish and implement a fee-for-service structure for long-term sustainability
  • Develop and monitor an annual budget for research operations
  • Develop detailed plans and budgets for specific projects demonstrating how the business objectives will be realized
  • Monitor and manage budgets with creation of financial reporting documentation for variance analysis and to assist in future long term financial planning
  • Ensure effective systems in place for invoicing users of the facility

Staff Management

  • Support research associates, research assistants and students utilizing the facility
  • Directly manage and oversee delivery of research services
  • Direct and conduct full cycle recruitment, training and development, performance reviews and annual increases
  • Manages performance, disciplinary action and termination of staff reporting to the position
  • Challenges others to develop as leaders while serving as a role model and mentor
  • Lead and manage the planning and implementation of multiple research projects
  • Lead and manage the research team, fostering a team-based culture, ensuring positive interactions with other team members and collaborators

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience (managing a radiology clinic; research project management)
  • Minimum of 5 years of technical experience.
  • At least 3 years’ experience managing and/or leading a team.
  • Direct experience in the field of bone and joint research is an asset.
  • Direct experience in a clinical/radiology setting is an asset.
  • Experience with creating and implementing SOPs, radiology workflows, quality assurance, and ethics.
  • Understanding of medical imaging equipment maintenance and operations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for liaison with multi-disciplinary research teams and senior administrative staff in multiple health care areas to foster collaborative research activities.
  • Experience within the University environment is desirable.
  • Proven ability to develop local and external collaborations.
  • Well-developed knowledge and expertise in the Health Care setting, particularly conducting research with physicians, other health care providers and patients.
  • Previous experience interacting with Industry Partners would be an asset.
  • Experience developing data collection forms, enrolment of participants, development of databases, statistical analysis and report generation.
  • Familiarity with federal and provincial governments, U of C, industry and health sectors stakeholders required.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • High level of effective time and project management, supervisory skills, leadership skills, facilitation skills, personal initiative and teamwork is a requirement
