Human Centered Design Lead, Continuing Medical Education, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Overview

The Office of Continuing Medicial Education in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Human Centered Design Lead. This Full-time Fixed Short-Term position is for approximately 2 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Manager, Physician Learning Program, the Human Centred Design Lead will work collaboratively with the PLP Calgary Project Managers and Medical Directors to apply human-centered design principles to improve audit and feedback projects, develop tools, measures and resources to bring evidence into practice.  

This position will play a key role in co-designing the online learning environment to stimulate dialogue and maximize the learner’s experience. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • INFORMATION DESIGN
    • Work closely with medical directors and project stakeholders to develop effective strategies for communicating physician practice data
    • Identify relevant frameworks and theories to use to improve efficacy of PLP projects
    • Use evidence-based design to develop resources that support physician reflection and practice improvement
    • Provide human-centred design expertise to external stakeholders to assist with physician practice improvement initiatives
  • DESIGN RESEARCH
    • Collaborate with internal and external project stakeholders on a project-to-project basis to refine project plans based on project requirements and user needs
    • Develop plans for engaging users and project stakeholders to conduct co-design and usability testing to generate knowledge about experiences and behaviours of providers and patients in Alberta
    • Engage project stakeholders and participants in generative research to create insights into the experiences and journeys of key players
    • Identify and synthesize relevant findings to identify opportunities for intervention or improvement
  • COORDINATION
    • Identify key project touchpoints, timelines and requirements for the Project Coordinator to schedule meetings and monitor progress
    • Oversee summer students and new design hires to delegate and coordinate design work as needed
  • COACHING
    • Communicate the value and process of proposed methodologies to familiarize PLP staff with implementation of HCD
    • Act as a supervisor to summer students to familiarize them with the PLP process and ease transitions
  • FACILITATION
    • Lead guided discussions with PLP Calgary staff to create a consistent process
    • Create discussion aids and utilize existing tools to assist with facilitation

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree required in a relevant area such as Human Centered Design or human factors
  • Demonstrated experience using human-centered design principles or systems thinking to frame a problem and prototype a solution
  • Experience with taking a generative research approach to gain insights into the behaviours of groups and individuals
  • Ability to conduct independent research, identify credible sources and apply evidence to human-centered design challenges
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
  • Experience creating data-driven dashboards (Tableau, Sas Viya) is an asset
  • Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of implementation science principles preferred
  • Experience designing to facilitate behaviour change in groups of individuals is an asset
  • TCPS 2: CORE certification is an asset
